Should we be lazy?

Ah, I can't be bothered...
This sweet surrender to laziness that pushes us to do nothing, and to savor the present moment. Who has never known this feeling? And no, laziness is not just a "teenage thing"! It is also an art of living, a return to the essential, an invitation to slow down in a world that turns too fast.
So, could laziness have unsuspected benefits on our well-being? How can we take advantage of it and what to do when it becomes “too much”?
Talc helps you find a happy medium!

What does it mean to be lazy?

Laziness represents not wanting to do much, in other words, it is great laziness . For some of us, laziness can become a real routine, a state of mind that leads us to favor comfort over effort , to seek the sweetness of a quiet moment rather than embarking on a tiring activity.

It's this feeling of slowness that prompts us to wrap our bodies in soft, cocooning clothes, to have food delivered instead of cooking, or to settle down on the couch with a good book or a comforting series.

Why are we lazy?

We often hear "I'm lazy", but do we really know what's behind it? Valérie Climent Questroy, psychologist, identifies five factors responsible for our laziness .

#1 - Lack of motivation. There are two types of motivation: intrinsic, which makes us vibrate, and extrinsic, which feeds on external rewards. If you're dragging your feet, it may be because your internal engine needs a good boost!

#2 - Procrastination. Putting off until tomorrow what we could do today is the favorite sport of the lazy! Procrastination, often linked to complicated emotional management, pushes us to favor small immediate joys rather than a long-term goal. Sometimes, perfectionism blocks us so much that we prefer to do nothing rather than risk doing it wrong.

#3 - Difficulty getting organized. Planning and prioritizing requires mental energy, and when the frontal cortex goes on strike, it's a disaster. We quickly get distracted and our goals gather dust.

#4 - The effort/reward imbalance. If we feel that the effort is not paying off, we settle into "learned helplessness". In other words, if the effort brings nothing, why bother?

#5 - Cognitive biases. Our thoughts can be real traps for laziness. We can minimize an effort to be made or, on the contrary, make it monumental, making any action discouraging.

So, next time you feel lazy, think about those little psychological demons that are holding you back. Maybe a nice blanket and a hot tea can help too!

Being lazy is good sometimes!

We often feel guilty about being lazy. However, it must be said that laziness is a welcome break from our hectic pace .
Today, everything moves fast, information falls in cascades and demands are omnipresent. Give yourself the right to breathe 😮‍💨 . Taking time for yourself is essential to recharge your batteries and cultivate a positive state of mind.

Yes, you heard correctly: doing nothing is not doing nothing . It actually helps to stimulate creativity and innovation , and to enjoy laziness as a form of well-being .

So, Laziness for all as Hadrien Klent suggests? One thing is sure, laziness always has its followers!

However, you have to be reasonable with laziness. The whole art of living with laziness lies in not letting it take over you completely… at the risk of finding yourself debating with your sofa about who deserves more rest. And believe me, it always wins!

But how can we transform this laziness into constructive energy?

⬇️

What to do when you're lazy?

First, we advise you to simply accept that you are lazy. Indeed, laziness is absolutely not an enemy to be defeated, but a signal that you may need to slow down. However, if you feel that laziness is taking over your daily life, here are some tips to help you better manage it:

  • Set small goals : Instead of saying “I have to clean the house” which immediately becomes a mental burden, start with “I will clean a room for 10 minutes”. This method makes the task less overwhelming and allows you to celebrate small victories.

  • Create an inspiring environment : Surround yourself with what motivates you. Whether it’s an upbeat playlist, calming colors, or a cozy reading nook, create a space that inspires you to take action.

  • Use the 5-minute rule : Tell yourself that you're going to work on a task for only 5 minutes. Often, once you start, the momentum will carry you through and you'll continue well beyond that time frame.

  • Avoid distractions : Identify what is wasting your time and create strategies to minimize those distractions. Sometimes turning off notifications or tidying up your workspace can make a big difference.

  • Get up at a reasonable hour : Establishing a morning routine can transform your day. Avoid oversleeping, it could affect your motivation!

Finally, you can also establish a wellness routine. Incorporate moments of movement into your day, even if it's just a few stretches or a quick walk. Physical activity stimulates endorphins and helps you fight laziness. For example, why not sign up for a sports class at a set time during the week or on the weekend to motivate yourself?

How to make the most of lazy moments?

As you will have understood, laziness is also a state of mind to embrace… In 1974, Georges Moustaki was not mistaken when he wrote The Right to be Lazy – which proves that even laziness has renowned defenders!

During these times, you can explore gentle activities that feed your creativity , such as drawing, reading, or even meditation. Take the time to enjoy a good tea or coffee while letting your thoughts wander .

If you feel the need, watch your favorite movie or series on Netflix without feeling guilty!
However, don't hesitate to plan times without your phone, TV or computer, to really reconnect with yourself and appreciate the present.
