It's summer: the season when freedom takes on its full meaning, when everyone wants to live according to their desires, without constraints . In the utopia of Thélème, the inhabitants live in harmony , guided only by their own will and free will . The golden rule of this abbey is: "Do what you want". In this summer season, wouldn't it be the perfect time to be free as a bird ?
The Abbey of Thélème and its motto
The inhabitants of the Abbey of Thélème rise when they please, eat and drink as they please, work and sleep as they please; no one wakes them or forces them to drink, eat or do anything else. This is how Gargantua has decided.
The Abbey of Thélème, imagined by François Rabelais in his work Gargantua (1834) , represents a utopian vision of individual freedom and personal happiness. The motto "Fay ce que veuxras" (old French for "Do what you want") sums up the spirit of autonomy and personal development that reigns in this place.
A motto that embodies the idea that every individual should be free to pursue their desires and aspirations without external constraint. The name of the abbey also means "the will".
Here, the reality principle is subject to the pleasure principle, and not the other way around! Freedom has no limits. The abbey of Thélème is forbidden to "hypocrites, bigots, old scamps, muffled beggars", and all those who have "a crooked soul".
This philosophy resonates particularly well at Talc : we design each garment with the aim of offering maximum comfort and well-being to flourish on a daily basis. By favouring sustainable and ethical materials, we invite everyone to live in harmony with their values: respect for themselves , for others (we are thinking in particular of the workers who make them), and for our planet .
Clothes as a reflection of our inner freedom
Adopting a similar approach - as the Abbey of Thelema describes - in our choice of clothing can encourage our personal growth. So the question is: how can the clothes we wear influence our individuality and freedom?
Choosing clothes that suit us, that we feel good in and that we like can greatly impact our mood. It can promote freedom of thought, and even affect our cognitive abilities. You will find some studies on the subject in our article: How the quality of our clothes influences our mood.
"He is free who can choose from among all the goods that appeal to him, those that respond to his deepest aspirations."
We believe that sustainable fashion can be a way to express this freedom. The clothes we choose can not only reflect our personality and inner values, but also strengthen our self-confidence. Opt for clothes that respect your well-being and our planet, and let yourself be inspired by the spirit of Thélème to live in harmony with yourself!
The Talc philosophy: “sustainable” comfort and elegance
The Abbey of Thélème, built by the giant Gargantua , is a place where the usual social rules are overturned. In this line of inner freedom and self-respect, Talc embodies a philosophy where comfort and elegance blend harmoniously with a sustainable conscience.
We select materials such as Tencel Lyocell™ , organic cotton and Supima ® cotton , which guarantee softness and longevity. Our desire is to create clothes that are as good for you as they are for the environment. At Talc, comfort also rhymes with style : we take care to select cuts and designs that are both simple and elegant.
Our clothes thus offer a versatile wardrobe: they can be worn both outside and at home for moments of relaxation. Comfortable, they allow great freedom of movement, essential for carrying out your daily activities.
We produce locally in Portugal, in factories that respect workers' rights. The production rate depends solely on the state of our stocks. For the health of the workers and to avoid overproduction, we have chosen to manufacture in small quantities.
Soft, breathable and eco-friendly clothing
In summer, wearing lightweight fabrics is essential to stay cool and comfortable, especially on hot days. Choose Tencel Lyocell™, a particularly breathable material that has the specific ability to regulate body temperature . Thus, it limits perspiration and the development of bacteria (and bad odors with it).
Made from wood pulp and a non-toxic organic solvent, Tencel Lyocell has a low environmental impact. It is produced in a quasi-closed loop: materials are constantly recycled, processed and reused. Its touch is so soft that it is often compared to silk.
This summer and all year round: feel free to be yourself!
Thélème presents herself as an anti-prison as much as an "anti-abbey". In the work Gargantua , bells and clocks can disappear, giving way to a harmonious existence where each individual follows his own rhythm, guided by his desires.
This summer, and all year long, follow Thélème's motto: do what you want, wear what you like and live your inner freedom to the fullest! Take advantage of the longer days to relax and savor each moment as you wish.
In short: do what you want!
